Rutgers University Diagnostic Services

Rutgers University Diagnostic Services is a comprehensive biopsy service specializing in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Our pathologists are board-certified specialists who offer oral tissue diagnostic services, as well as consultative diagnostic services to all medical and dental communities.

As part of the state’s largest research university, we have a wealth of expert resources and interdisciplinary ties that can help ensure a proper diagnosis. We can also provide special testing if required. We are part of the Diagnostic Sciences Department in the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine and have collaborative relationships with the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. We provide state-of-the-art services, including standard tissue processing, staining, molecular diagnostics, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry.

Sending a Biopsy

Please download our Biopsy Examination Request form and complete it with patient information, billing information, provider information and all the appropriate information regarding the lesion (anatomic site/clinical appearance/history), and also include any photographs or radiographs taken of the site of the lesion. Also please download and have the patient complete our Patient Consent form.

Please send all biopsies in sealed 10% formalin containers that we will provide to your office. Please label each specimen bottle with patient information (name, date of birth, and biopsy site) and the provider name to this address:
Rutgers University Diagnostic Services
Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, Room D-880
P.0. Box 1709
110 Bergen Street
Newark, NJ 07103

Please contact us if you have any questions or need consultation on sending biopsies, we are more than happy to provide you with any help you may require.

Request for Biopsy Kits

For your convenience, we offer free biopsy submission kits. Biopsy kit includes: an exterior container, a formalin bottle, a biopsy examination request form and a patient consent form. For our free biopsy kits, please contact us at 973-972-1646 or email us at RUdiagnosticservices@sdm.rutgers.edu.

Request for Consultation

We excel at reviewing problematic or difficult histopathology slides. We recognize that interpretation of oral biopsies may be challenging and requires understanding of clinical information that is specific to the oral cavity. If your clinical impression is inconsistent with a histopathological diagnosis rendered, you can request our review of the slides. Please send glass slides and/or tissue blocks to our pathology laboratory at:
Rutgers University Diagnostic Services
Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, Room D-850
P.0. Box 1709
110 Bergen Street
Newark, NJ 07103

Request for Slide Release

Please download and complete Consent for Release of Information. Please include all appropriate information as requested in the form with patient’s signature and date of signature, and please send this form to:
Rutgers University Diagnostic Services
Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, Room D-880
P.0. Box 1709
110 Bergen Street
